About the Event

FREE INTRODUCTORY CLASS

Artist and MICA art instructor Duane Lutsko will host a series of workshops that investigate a series of topical concerns and approaches to painting. Studio sessions and demonstrations will focus on issues specific to oil painting, however, all media are welcome. These sequential sessions will be tailored to individual needs and are designed for all levels of experience.

Goals and benefits:

  • Explore the liberating practice of Charles Hawthorne’s tonal mud heads.
  • Develop the one-off painting, a quickly rendered, process of discovery.
  • Recognize the influence of gestalt and the power of the suggestive image.
  • Embed spontaneity and sustain the original inspiration of your work.

Enjoy an intellectual, studio experience of creative endeavor and explore personal growth.

No experience necessary. Ages 14 and up. Students must provide their own materials. Materials list available on request.

About the Instructor:

Duane has a B.A. in Fine Arts and Painting from UCLA and MFA from Brooklyn College, and has been an instructor at MICA here in Maryland as well as the Catonsville Alternative School in Baltimore teaching at-risk youth. Duane's philosophy of teaching to the visual/spatial/kinesthetic domains of the brain provides his students with alternative strategies for success and for critical thinking skills.

Creating and experiencing art is crucial to developing cognitive and emotional whole-brain, and full-human, capacity. As a studio painter I am dedicated to the inner voice and in pursuit of the elusive "zone": that perfect, elemental moment when everything flows. As an art educator my objective remains the human core, but the goal is now extrinsic: to teach and train individuals with diverse backgrounds and abilities to tap into their strengths, challenge their fears, and to learn to see for themselves. These are noble pursuits.
