MDAA UNMASKED VIRTUAL EXHIBIT
The Maryland Artist Anonymous is a group of art educators that have taken the time to focus on their personal artwork, outside the classroom. The MDAA group has been creating, collaborating, critiquing and exhibiting together for several years. We are interested in how our work stands alone as individual artists in contrast to how our work can influence, support and complement each other’s. This “Unmasked” exhibit theme has allowed us to show our resilience and our focus on the production of artwork during a time of quarantine and isolation.

Although I have taught art for 11 years, I am just recently prioritizing time to make my own personal art. Making art offers an interruption from the virtual world that quarantine has become. My style continues to evolve, merging realism with fun, exaggerated colors and pattern.

Red Tide
Artist: Rachel Horner
Red TideMixed Media on paper12” x 16”2020
A seed is unknowingly transported to a new place. A fire decimates a rainforest, leaving only burning embers and ashes. Every action creates an echo that reverberates throughout the intricate, interconnected ecosystem. Whether a foreign species overtaking their new home, or a coral reef breathing its dying breath, our experiences shift and sway the delicate balance within each environment. I examine the complexity of our climate crisis by employing saturated hues, layering images over and over again, alluding to global data maps, chemical spills, and animal agriculture. Within the double exposures I create from photographs I take of nature, plants and wildlife struggle to survive. I investigate the duality of nature’s immense resilience and simultaneous fragility through the deconstruction and reconstruction of an image that has been layered, cut, and reassembled on mirrored plexiglass. The presence versus absence of both image and mirror leaves viewers to draw their own conclusions about our existence in a time where climate change is disbelieved and our lives are increasingly globalized.

Sometimes Our Paths Cross
Artist: Jordyn Roemer
Sometimes Our Paths CrossAcrylic and Gold Leaf on Canvas24"x24"
Jordyn Roemer is a mother, artist, and teacher based out of Brooklyn Park, Maryland. This body of work is a reflection on the impact of the relationships we have with the people around us. The influence they have on us as human beings, and the careful ways in which we selectively maintain our barriers or allow ourselves to open up. These artworks are a nod to japanese Kintsugi, where gold is used to mend broken pottery, creating something more beautiful than the original piece. The connections we make in our lives outside of ourselves do exactly that… when we’re ready for them.

Spill
Artist: Rachel Horner
SpillMixed Media on paper12” x 16”2020

"Refraction"Oil on canvas18"x14"
Although I have taught art for 11 years, I am just recently prioritizing time to make my own personal art. Making art offers an interruption from the virtual world that quarantine has become. I was formally educated in graphic design and as much as I still enjoy creating digitally, I have found a love for painting. I find inspiration in my everyday world. My style continues to evolve, merging realism with fun, exaggerated colors and pattern.

Window Walk

Window Walk Alternative process intaglio print15x12" (Framed)
Erin Lehrmann is a maker, baker, poet and teacher who lives and works in Baltimore, Maryland. This body of work began as mixed-media collages in her sketchbook, created from found classroom ephemera and fragments of collected images. She redrew the compositions onto matboard and incised the matboard to create alternative-process intaglio prints, over which she layered wintergreen oil transfers to selectively add color, pattern and texture from the original collages.

Shell
Artist: Rachel Horner
ShellRice paper & methylcellulose6" x 8" 2018
